The Story of Assam, a State Fighting Against the Floods
In July 2026, Assam once again faced one of its most devastating flood crises. The disaster began after exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall, with intense rainfall in the surrounding hill regions sending huge volumes of water downstream. The Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries, along with sudden hill torrents, contributed to the widespread flooding across parts of Assam.
What the water took away
The floods destroyed homes, damaged roads and infrastructure, affected agriculture and livestock, and forced thousands of families to leave everything behind and move to safer places. Many people lost their homes, belongings and sources of livelihood. Children, elderly people, families living in vulnerable areas, and animals were among those facing the greatest difficulties.
The situation became a major humanitarian crisis. At the height of the disaster, hundreds of thousands of people were affected, while government authorities opened relief camps and carried out rescue operations. Even as floodwaters began to recede in some areas, many families continued to struggle with damaged homes, contaminated surroundings, loss of livestock and the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.
Humanity came forward
But in the middle of this tragedy, humanity also came forward. Government agencies, rescue teams, local communities, volunteers, NGOs and individuals joined hands to provide food, clean water, medicines, shelter and other essential relief materials. Rescue and relief operations continued in affected areas, while relief camps provided temporary shelter and basic support to displaced families.
People from different parts of India also stepped forward to support Assam. Donations and relief assistance came from individuals, public figures, organisations and governments, showing that during a disaster, humanity has no boundaries.
What Assam needs now
Today, Assam needs more than emergency relief. It needs support for:
